WOD303: Shopbot 2: 4th Axis and Tool Changes

In this class students will learn how to set up the 4th axis attachment for the ShopBot PRS Alpha, safe operation of the machine, strategies for material preparation, tool changes and advanced utilization of the ShopBot3 software user interface. Similar to a lathe, the Shopbot Rotary Indexer provides the ability to turn the part, but grants the user precise control over the finished part. In addition to the lathe work, it also allows for 3D sculptures to be created.

Prerequisites: Use of CAD/CAM software like Vcarve Pro (CNC 201) is essential for being able to create your own projects using the 4th Axis. In addition, students must have completed the Shopbot SBU prior to taking this class.

Material Fee: Class price includes a ball nose end mill.

Equipment Access: Shopbot Rotary Indexer (4th Axis)

Safety
  • Required: Closed-toe shoes, short sleeves, no dangling jewelry; tie back long hair

  • Advisable: Hearing protection and a particle filter or dust mask

WOD102: Hand Tool Basics

This is a great skill building class for adults who may have missed high school shop class or are looking to familiarize themselves with these tools before undertaking a DIY project. The class is also ideal for young people who are interested in learning how these tools can empower them to build whatever they imagine, from a skate ramp to a backyard roller coaster.

In this class, you will learn how to safely operate a number of the most frequently used hand tools. Your instructor will guide you through the proper techniques to cut, shape, assemble, and finish a small project.

WOD101: Woodshop Access SBU

Learn how to safely operate the core woodshop tools in this Access class (formerly called Safety and Basic Use).

After this class, members will have access to the SawStop table saw, sliding compound miter saw, drill press, band saw, and belt and disk sanders. Learn to set up straight cuts (rip and crosscut), mitered cuts, curved cuts, smooth edges, and drill holes.

Project: This class doesn't include a project.

Prerequisites: None

Equipment access: Sliding compound miter saw, table saw, wood drill press, wood band saw, and belt and disc sanders

Safety
  • Mandatory: Closed-toe shoes, eye protection, short sleeves, face shield

  • Advisable: Hearing protection, particle filter, or dust mask

Note: This class does not cover the wood router, the planer, the jointer, or the wood lathe.

Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at TechShop as a member!

WOD201: Jointer, Planer, and Table Router SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn proper techniques and how to safely operate the jointer, planer, and table-mounted router.

Use these woodworking tools to turn rough lumber into finished boards (achieve precise thickness, square edges and flat surfaces) as well as create complex profiles for edge finishing and joinery operations. Say goodbye to the constraints of lumberyard wood and the high price of mail order wood. Say hello to affordable custom woodworking projects!

Project: Perform various operations on a piece of wood

Recommended: Successful completion of WOD 101: Basic Woodshop SBU prior to taking this class

Equipment access: Table-mounted router, jointer, planer

WOD302: CNC ShopBot SBU

In this Safety and Basic Use (SBU) class, learn to use the computer-controlled (CNC) ShopBot router to cut objects, parts, or art designed in 2D or 3D CAD.

This powerful tool is perfect for rapid prototyping and digital fabrication. Create parts with complex curves and surfaces from most woods, plastics, foams, and other composites (no metal on this machine). This class teaches the use of the machine, but does not cover CAD drawing or toolpathing. VCarve Pro (CNC 201) is a good starting point for people new to CAD and CAM.

Materials fee: Includes materials for the class project and a router bit for each student to keep.

Project: Wooden gear

Prerequisites: Use of CAD and CAM software like VCarve Pro (CNC 201) and Basic Woodshop SBU (WOD101) are recommended.

Are you looking to liven up your culinary experience with beautiful hardwoods?

Come and join us and one of our master woodworkers as you learn to handcraft a laminated cutting board with various species of hardwoods. With these core fundamentals, you will be able to make all types of cutting boards once the class is completed!

Prerequisites: Successful completion of WOD201: Jointer, Planer, and Table Router SBU is required prior to taking this class. Do not sign up for this class if you have not taken and passed that class.
